The story of eXzez.
A Journey Through 30 Years of Electronic Sounds
Early Years and First Steps into Music
eXzez is a musician from Berlin during the time of the German reunification – shaped by an unusual yet fascinating musical journey that spans over three decades.
Born in 1975, his passion for music began in the late 1980s when he first experimented with sound using a Commodore C=64. On its simple two mono channels, he created Chiptunes, laying the foundation for a lifelong love of digital sounds and composition.
Entering the Electronic Scene
As the electronic music scene exploded in the 1980s and 90s, his ambitions grew. Especially in the vibrant post-wall Berlin, countless underground clubs and parties provided space for new musical expressions. Equipped with an Amiga 600 HD, eXzez started producing powerful Gabba sounds.
Phonetics – The Gabba Era (1992–1998)
In 1992, together with deaf_aid, he founded the Gabba project “Phonetics.” Their intense afterparties and live acts on the Amiga earned them a small but loyal fan base.
A milestone came in 1994 with their first club gig at the legendary Linientreu Berlin. While their fans danced enthusiastically, the regular crowd was overwhelmed by the harsh beats. When their equipment failed mid-performance, improvisation saved the night – an unforgettable experience that shaped eXzez’s path.
Transition to Hardstyle and Goa
(1998–2001)
By the late 1990s, eXzez’s style shifted from hardcore Gabba to more accessible Hardstyle Techno and psychedelic Goa sounds. In 1998, Phonetics came to an end, and together with deaf_aid he launched Kokomo.
Under the alias X-Trible, they released numerous unofficial tracks. In 1999, at the turn of the millennium, two songs were featured on compilations:
- S.O.S. on “The Millennium D.J. Compilation”
- 20th Century on “Xpect Christmas D.J. Compilation”
Platforms like mp3.com gave additional exposure to his creative work.
Digital Production and Genre Exploration
At the same time, eXzez embraced the possibilities of digital music production. From tools like Fasttracker, Dreamstation, Orion, and Rebirth, he ultimately chose Propellerhead Reason (now ReasonStudios) – still his go-to software today.
This era led him to experiment across multiple genres including House, Trance, Chillout, Breakbeats, Experimental and PsyTrance.
First Solo Works – DJNeo and “X-Sounds” (2003)
In 2003, eXzez released his first solo album under the alias DJNeo: X-Sounds.
Over six months, he crafted a minimalist, experimental house record infused with psychedelic influences and early progressive elements. The album featured nine tracks and was briefly available as a pre-release on ReverbNation.
Cosmic-Infusion and Underground Releases (2007–2015)
In 2007, together with psyflex, he launched Cosmic-Infusion, later joined by DJ Yoshimitzue. Their tracks included Ambient Waves, Darktales, The Gods and Discover the Moon, shared mainly through Soundcloud and ReverbNation.
Although several underground releases saw the light of day, much of his work remained unreleased until 2025.
Official Releases Starting in 2025
On March 5, 2025, eXzez finally released his first official solo single “Time of War.” Soon after followed:
- “A Wistful Change” on May 9, 2025
- “On the Way” on August 14, 2025
Today and Looking Ahead
But this is far from the end. eXzez continues to evolve, staying curious and experimental – and invites everyone to join him on this ongoing musical journey.
